Foundation of Biodegradable Polymers in Pharmaceutics

Abstract

Biodegradable polymers can be regarded as one of the essential components of contemporary pharmaceutics due to characteristics such as biocompatibility, controllable degradation and wide applicability in the manufacture of drug delivery devices, tissue engineering products and regenerative medicines. Natural polymers such as chitosan, alginate, gelatin and starch, as well as synthetic polymers such as PLA, PGA and PLGA, are of considerable interest. This chapter presents a general introduction to the basics of biodegradable polymers in pharmaceutics, including their classification, characteristics, degradation process, pharmaceutical uses, strengths, weaknesses and future potential.
