Synthetic Biodegradable Polymers: PLA, PLGA, PCL and Beyond

Abstract

Synthetic biodegradable polymers are widely utilised in pharmaceutics and healthcare due to their unique properties such as biocompatibility, controlled degradability and versatility in advanced drug delivery systems. This review highlights the various classes and pharmaceutical significance of major synthetic biodegradable polymers, including PLA, PGA, PLGA, PCL, polyanhydrides, polyorthoesters and poly(amino-acids). Methods of synthesis, physicochemical properties, mechanisms of action and degradation are discussed, together with patented technologies, recent innovations and applications extending to 3D-printing, oncotherapy, gene delivery, tissue engineering and biomedical implants.
