Natural and Bioderived Polymer in Drug Delivery and Regeneration

Abstract

Natural and bio-derived polymers such as collagen, gelatin, fibrin, agar and chitosan are obtained from renewable sources and offer biocompatibility, non-toxicity, biodegradability and flexibility, making them favourable in biomedical research. They have found widespread applications in drug delivery systems, where their controlled and targeted release improves drug stability and reduces side effects, and in regeneration, including bone, cardiovascular and skin tissue regeneration and wound healing. This chapter focuses on the classification, biological properties, preparation techniques and use of natural and bioderived polymers in drug delivery and regeneration.
