Abstract

Polymer matrices have proven to be highly efficient drug carriers due to their customisable physicochemical characteristics, biocompatibility and potential to control therapeutic release. They allow loading of drugs into a biodegradable or non-biodegradable polymeric matrix for sustained, targeted and stimuli-controlled release. This chapter reviews controlled and targeted drug delivery by polymer matrices, fabrication technologies such as solvent casting, electrospinning, nanoparticle precipitation and gelation, smart matrices responsive to pH, temperature, enzymes, magnetic fields and electric potentials, and applications across oral, transdermal, ocular, injectable and implantable routes.
