Advanced Biodegradable System for Regenerative Therapeutics

Abstract

Regenerative therapeutics involves the restoration, replacement and regeneration of damaged tissues and organs in order to regain proper functionality. Advanced biodegradable systems allow for the delivery of drugs, growth factors or live cells directly into affected areas and degrade within the body without side effects. This chapter discusses their use across tissue engineering, wound healing, bone, cartilage and nerve tissue engineering and cardiovascular disease therapy, the natural and synthetic materials involved, technological advances such as 3D bioprinting, electrospinning and nanotechnology, and key challenges including degradation-rate control, mechanical integrity and immune response.
