About This Book

Two convictions shaped the book. The first is that psychology earns its place in a pharmacy curriculum only if it changes what a pharmacist does, so every concept here is followed to a decision someone actually makes: whether a reported symptom is amplification or pathology, whether a patient who has stopped a medicine is unable or unwilling, what may lawfully be said to the son of an inpatient who telephones. The second is that communication is a clinical procedure rather than a personality trait. It has an indication, a technique, a failure mode and an error rate, and like any other procedure it is learned, practised and assessed. Units III and IV are written on that basis.

The book is organised as twelve chapters across the five syllabus units. Each opens with learning outcomes traceable to the official Course Outcomes, develops the topic with the mechanism before the application, and closes with a summary and a self-assessment section of short-answer questions with model answers, long-answer questions with mark-aware outlines, and multiple-choice questions with an answer key. Figures and tables are numbered by chapter and referred to by number wherever the prose depends on them.
