Corresponding author: [email protected]
Abstract
Women experience continuous hormonal changes from puberty to menopause, and these fluctuations profoundly influence skin physiology, hair growth, pigmentation, wound healing, and the aging process. As awareness of long-term skin and hair health increases, there has been a noticeable shift from conventional cosmetics toward herbal cosmeceuticals that combine aesthetic benefits with scientifically supported therapeutic effects. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the relationship between female hormones and dermatological health while highlighting the growing role of medicinal plants and their bioactive constituents in the prevention and management of hormone-related skin and hair disorders. It discusses the biological basis of female skin and hair, endocrine regulation, molecular signaling pathways, and the mechanisms underlying common conditions such as acne, melasma, premature skin aging, female pattern hair loss, postpartum alopecia, and menopausal skin changes. The chapter further explores the pharmacological potential of herbal ingredients, including flavonoids, terpenoids, phenolic compounds, essential oils, and phytosterols, with emphasis on their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, collagen-enhancing, and hormone-modulating activities. Recent advances in nano-cosmeceuticals, targeted drug delivery, artificial intelligence, omics technologies, and personalized skincare are also discussed.
