Abstract

3D bioprinting and tissue engineering are emerging technologies that are revolutionizing women's healthcare. This chapter explores the fundamental concepts of 3D bioprinting and tissue engineering and their significance for addressing challenges in women's health. It examines essential bioprinting technologies such as inkjet, extrusion, and laser-assisted bioprinting, as well as the function of bioinks, biomaterials, and living cells in the development of functional tissue constructs. The chapter also discusses key tissue engineering strategies, including scaffold-based and scaffold-free approaches, and the importance of growth factors and cellular signaling in tissue development. Particular focus is directed towards applications in women's health, including the reconstruction of reproductive tissue (uterus, ovary), breast tissue engineering, and the modelling of diseases such as endometriosis, PCOS, and infertility, along with applications in drug screening and personalized medicine. Furthermore, the incorporation of herbal bioactive compounds in bioinks for tissue regeneration is discussed, highlighting an innovative application of herbal therapeutics in bioprinting. The chapter addresses persistent challenges related to vascularization, tissue maturation, scalability, and ethical and regulatory issues, and outlines future directions including the use of artificial intelligence and advances in regenerative medicine.
