Phytochemical Signatures: Bioactive Markers in Women's Therapeutics

Abstract
Women's health disorders such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, menopause, infertility, and cervical and breast cancer represent a significant global public health burden, and conventional therapies are often limited by adverse effects, drug resistance, hormonal disturbances and high treatment costs. Plant-derived phytochemicals offer safer, multi-target therapeutic options for these conditions. This chapter examines phytochemical signatures as bioactive markers for identifying, standardizing and validating medicinal plants used in women's therapeutics. It reviews the major classes of bioactive constituents relevant to female health, their mechanisms of action, and their role in the quality control and authentication of herbal drugs. Emphasis is placed on the use of chemical fingerprinting and biomarker profiling to ensure consistency and therapeutic reliability of herbal formulations. The chapter concludes by outlining future prospects for precision phytotherapy and biomarker-guided herbal medicine in women's healthcare.
