Abstract
Reproductive health and fertility issues affect a significant percentage of the world population, which has led to a renewed interest in safe, effective and holistic therapeutic modalities. Through its strong tradition in traditional knowledge and growing validation through modern scientific scrutiny, phytotherapy offers promising avenues to address these critical health concerns. This chapter offers a comprehensive review of herbal agents for fertility and reproductive health improvement, focusing on the pharmacognosy, phytochemical profiling and therapeutic potential of important medicinal plants including potent flora from the Himalayan region. It provides a systematic review of botanical sources that have traditionally been identified as reproductive tonics and fertility enhancers, and details the active chemical constituents responsible for their pharmacological efficacy, such as phytoestrogens, alkaloids and adaptogenic saponins. The chapter explains how these phytotherapeutic agents modulate endocrine balance, improve follicular and testicular health and mitigate oxidative stress within the reproductive system by elucidating their mechanisms of action. Acknowledging the significance of clinical safety, the text underscores the necessity for sophisticated analytical screening, stringent quality control and standardisation of these herbal formulations. Special attention is paid to drug-likeness evaluation of these natural compounds, bridging the gap between traditional ethnomedicine and modern drug discovery, with the aim of providing researchers and practitioners with evidence-based insights for the safe incorporation of phytomedicine into reproductive health care.
