Abstract

Pregnancy is a delicate physiological condition that requires special attention regarding the safety and efficacy of herbal medicines used for maternal health. Traditional herbal remedies have long been employed to manage common pregnancy-related conditions such as nausea, anemia, anxiety, constipation, edema and nutritional deficiencies. However, the therapeutic use of herbs during pregnancy demands rigorous quality evaluation and safety validation to avoid potential teratogenic, toxic or adverse maternal effects. This chapter focuses on the pharmacognostic standardization of pregnancy-safe herbs to ensure their identity, purity, quality and therapeutic reliability, highlighting macroscopic and microscopic characterization, physicochemical analysis, phytochemical screening, chromatographic profiling and authentication techniques for selected medicinal herbs considered safe during pregnancy. Emphasis is placed on evidence-based evaluation through traditional literature, clinical studies, toxicological data and modern scientific validation, integrating pharmacognostic standardization with contemporary research to establish safer herbal formulations for prenatal care and maternal wellness.
