Market Trends, Innovation Gaps, and Patentable Herbal Formulations

Abstract

The global herbal pharmaceutical sector is experiencing unprecedented expansion, driven by converging epidemiological, technological and consumer forces that have shifted plant-based therapeutics from traditional practice towards evidence-based medicine. This chapter offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary examination of market trends, formulation innovations, critical innovation gaps and intellectual property strategies in the herbal pharmaceutical domain. The global herbal medicine market, estimated at around USD 130 billion in 2023, is expected to grow to approximately USD 350 billion by 2035 at a compound annual growth rate of 7.5–9.1%, with Asia-Pacific, North America and Europe as the principal growth markets. Key consumer trends include a rising appetite for adaptogenic, immunomodulatory and cognitive-health botanicals, supported by expanding clinical evidence and increasingly strict quality standards. On the technology side, progress in nano-herbal drug delivery such as phytosomes, solid lipid nanoparticles, self-emulsifying systems and polymeric carriers is reshaping formulation science, while the chapter also maps the innovation gaps and patenting strategies most relevant to commercialising safe, standardized herbal formulations for maternal healthcare.
