Modern Pharmaceutics (MPH 103T)

By Ms. Anupama Kumari, Ms. Sunita Nirban, Ms. Samriti Sharma & Ms. Swati Kashyap

Modern Pharmaceutics (MPH 103T) is the course in which the first-semester M.Pharm student moves from the dosage form as a finished object to the dosage form as an industrial product: characterised before it is formulated, optimized by design rather than by trial, manufactured in qualified facilities under current good manufacturing practice, and judged by numbers. This book follows the Pharmacy Council of India syllabus unit by unit and is written so that a student who reads it carefully can answer the long questions, write the short notes and solve the numericals the university paper sets.

About This Book

The five syllabus units are taught in eight chapters. Unit 1a, which is unusually broad, is divided into three chapters: preformulation and stability kinetics; disperse systems (emulsions, suspensions and self-microemulsifying systems); and large and small volume parenterals. Optimization and pilot plant scale-up, validation, cGMP and industrial management, the physics of compression, and the consolidation, dissolution, diffusion and pharmacokinetic parameters with their statistical evaluation follow in the order of the syllabus. Topics named in the course objectives but not in the unit text (generic product development, pilot plant scale-up, sterilisation and packaging) are placed where they belong logically and are cross-referenced.

Three convictions run through the book. Quality is designed into a product during preformulation, optimization and validation; it cannot be tested into a finished batch. Nearly every formulation decision rests on a kinetic or physical argument that can be stated as an equation. And a decision is only as sound as the numbers and the statistics behind it. For this reason each chapter carries worked examples drawn from the laboratory and the plant floor, and every calculation in the book has been recomputed.

Facts, limits and regulatory requirements have been checked against the prescribed texts and the current ICH, WHO, USP, EU and Indian (Revised Schedule M) documents. The book closes with a consolidated formula sheet and a glossary, and each chapter ends with a self-assessment section of long questions, short notes and numericals.
