Herbal Management of Gynecological Conditions

Abstract
Women's health issues related to the reproductive system - the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, vagina and vulva - are known as gynecological disorders. Some of the most common include endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), uterine fibroids, abnormal periods and pelvic organ prolapse, all of which can cause chronic pain, abnormal bleeding or infertility. There is a promising holistic approach for managing gynecological disorders that integrates traditional wisdom with current scientific research, including the therapeutic benefits of herbs. While conventional treatment relies heavily on synthetic medications and may help relieve symptoms, patients often experience side effects or long-term limitations, and many are therefore interested in exploring herbal alternatives. Medicinal plants traditionally used to treat gynecological disorders include Shatavari, Ashoka, Punarnava and Aloe vera; these and many other plants have potential therapeutic applications owing to their phytoestrogenic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and hormone-balancing properties. The main objective of this chapter is to assess the use of medicinal herbs for the treatment of various gynecological disorders by focusing on their pharmacological effects and on the clinical and pre-clinical evidence. Ongoing challenges of standardisation of herbal use, dosage regulation and the absence of large clinical studies are areas of concern; however, novel herbal formulations are providing new opportunities for women's health care providers and patients, and the addition of herbal preparations to general medical practice offers safety and effectiveness when supported by scientific validation and quality monitoring.
