Abstract
Heterocyclic chemistry is a vital area of organic and pharmaceutical chemistry because heterocyclic compounds are widely found in natural products, therapeutic agents and industrial chemicals. The incorporation of heteroatoms such as nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur or phosphorus into cyclic structures imparts unique chemical and biological properties. This chapter presents an overview of advanced heterocyclic chemistry, including its historical development, classification, nomenclature, aromaticity, electronic structure and physicochemical properties. It also discusses important heterocyclic ring systems and their occurrence in biologically active molecules. Special emphasis is given to the pharmaceutical importance of heterocyclic compounds, as they constitute the core structure of many clinically used drugs with enhanced efficacy and selectivity. Furthermore, recent advances in green synthesis, nanotechnology, computational chemistry and artificial intelligence have significantly accelerated the discovery and development of novel heterocyclic compounds. The chapter provides a strong foundation for understanding the role of heterocyclic chemistry in modern drug discovery and chemical research.
