Abstract

Precision medicine and personalized medicine are innovative health care practices which seek to deliver targeted treatment therapies based on an individual's genetic makeup, environment and lifestyle. Everything about precision medicine is different from the one-size-fits-all approach; it is intended to discover the molecular and genetic elements of disease that are associated with disease development and progression. The development of precision medicine in clinical practice has improved dramatically in recent years because of new developments in genomics, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence and molecular diagnostics. Personalized therapies use patient-specific information to choose the most effective drugs, dose them optimally and reduce side effects. Genetic profiling and biomarker analysis performed by clinicians can help them predict the risk of developing disease, individual responses to treatment and the likelihood of adverse effects, supporting safer and more effective use of heterocyclic and other therapeutic agents. This chapter examines the scientific foundations, enabling technologies, clinical applications and future prospects of precision medicine and personalized therapeutics, and considers the ethical, regulatory and data-related challenges that must be addressed for their responsible adoption.
