Epigenetics in Reproductive Cancer: Molecular Mechanisms, Biomarkers and Therapeutic Opportunities
Corresponding author: [email protected]
Abstract
Epigenetic changes play an important role in the development and progression of reproductive cancers by altering gene activity without directly changing the DNA sequence. This chapter provides an overview of major epigenetic mechanisms, including DNA methylation, histone modifications, chromatin remodeling, and non-coding RNAs, and discusses their contribution to endometrial, ovarian, cervical, vulvar, and vaginal cancers. Particular attention is given to abnormal methylation patterns, altered histone regulation, chromatin-remodeling proteins, and dysregulated miRNAs and lncRNAs as potential molecular markers of cancer development and progression. The chapter also explores the influence of hormonal, environmental, metabolic, and lifestyle factors on epigenetic regulation. Emerging epigenetic biomarkers, liquid biopsy approaches, and multi-omics strategies are discussed for improving cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment selection. In addition, current epigenetic therapies and their potential use in combination with chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy are highlighted. Recent advances in artificial intelligence and personalized epigenomic approaches may further support biomarker discovery and patient-specific treatment. Overall, understanding epigenetic dysregulation offers promising opportunities for earlier detection, improved therapeutic strategies, and more precise management of reproductive cancers.
