General Pharmacology (Practical)
About This Book
General Pharmacology (Practical) turns the theory of drug action into a set of measurements. The manual opens with the history of experimental pharmacology, laboratory safety and hygiene, the instruments in common use, and the experimental and transgenic animals that pharmacology depends on, before moving to the ethical and regulatory framework of the 6Rs, CCSEA rules and OECD and ICH guidance.
Later experiments build quantitative skill: construction and interpretation of dose-response curves, the potentiating effect of physostigmine and the antagonising effect of d-tubocurarine on the response to acetylcholine, determination of PD2, estimation of LD50 by the OECD 425 method, calculation of pharmacokinetic parameters from hypothetical data, and software-based genotoxicity and teratogenicity testing. Specimen data tables are worked out in full so that the method of calculation is clear, while matching blank tables are left for the student's own observations, letting the volume serve as both a textbook to study from and a record book to write in.
